This page serves as a hub for information, advice, and resources about navigating college as a first-generation student. For many first-gen students, it takes a lot of initiative and courage just to get through the admissions and enrollment process—and then comes the work of finding your place, feeling like a Denisonian, and persevering in your educational goals. At Denison, there is a lot of pride in being a first-generation college student, and the experiences of Denison “first-gens” are integral to the life of the college. Proportionally, first-gens are more likely to serve as campus and community leaders, creating a strong community of first-gens who push each other to succeed and support one another in accomplishing their goals. Denison is proud to welcome first-generation students and the college works hard to help students get the most from their Denison experience. We applaud the talents, strength, and determination that first-generation students exercise to succeed at Denison and beyond.
Nearly one in every five Denison students is a first-generation college student. Students may not realize that many members of the faculty and staff at Denison were the first of their families to attend college as well, including many members of the Knowlton Center Staff. The Knowlton Center for Career Exploration is committed to offering support at every step of your journey, from your first day at Denison to graduation and beyond. We will meet you wherever you are in your journey and stay with you throughout – from learning about resumes and cover letters to applying for internships and jobs. You don’t have to go at it alone!
