Faculty Champion: Dr. Taku Suzuki

We are excited to announce Dr. Taku Suzuki as the Knowlton Center’s April Faculty Champion! Through his steadfast collaboration with the Knowlton Center, Dr. Suzuki goes above and beyond to equip students with the tools and mindset needed to navigate their professional journeys with confidence.

Dr. Suzuki clearly demonstrates a dedication to his students’ career journeys, as he routinely integrates the resources of the Knowlton Center into both his introductory and upper-level courses in International Studies and Global Health. In his introductory courses, Dr. Suzuki ensures that students are introduced to the myriad services offered by the Knowlton Center, fostering a culture of career and life course exploration right from the start. Through this approach, students understand the value of leveraging resources early on to shape their professional trajectories.

“I want my students to know that discovering their intellectual interests and shaping career aspirations are not two distinct, let alone mutually exclusive, endeavors. Having the Knowlton Center career advisors in my classes, including Advising Circles and introductory courses, and helping students understand that their career exploration will take a long and often winding road is very important. Many students, understandably, have very narrow views on what their post-Denison careers will look like, and are unaware of so many opportunities Denison has to offer for assisting them to take the first of many, many steps they will take in their working years. I want them to cultivate a long-term view of their career and life”

-Dr. Taku Suzuki

For students majoring in International Studies, Dr. Suzuki takes his dedication a step further by integrating, with the help from the Knowlton and Lisska Centers, tailored career exploration experiences into senior seminars. By aligning these experiences with students’ academic interests and aspirations, he empowers them to envision the intersection between their education and future careers. This personalized approach underscores Dr. Suzuki’s belief that academics and career exploration should go hand-in-hand.

Moreover, Dr. Suzuki consistently reinforces in his students the significance of seizing the opportunities provided by the Knowlton Center. He emphasizes that the resources available to students are not only valuable but also unique, setting Denison apart from other institutions. By highlighting availability of these resources, he encourages students to not take them for granted and not wait to capitalize on them.

Through Dr. Suzuki’s guidance, students come to realize that they possess the skills and resources necessary to thrive in a variety of industries and fields. His unwavering support and encouragement create a nurturing environment where students feel empowered to explore their passions and pursue their professional goals, both in and outside of the classroom.

In conclusion, Professor Taku Suzuki epitomizes the spirit of interdepartmental collaboration through his partnership with the Knowlton Center. His dedication to integrating career preparation into the academic experience proves his dedication to his students’ success, not only in academics, but throughout the lives they build for themselves. Through his efforts, he not only prepares students for successful careers but also empowers them to lead fulfilling lives beyond graduation.
