The Power of Storytelling: Torria Catrone ’24

Say hello to Torria Catrone, a senior Politics and Public Affairs and Journalism double major from New Albany, Ohio. This summer, Torria had two internships! During the day, Torria was an intern at “All Sides,” an WOSU and NPR daily public-affairs talk show designed to touch upon all sides of the issues and events that shape life in Central Ohio. A show that Torria once listened to growing up soon became a show she would work on in June! Working daily from 9am to 1pm, Torria completed research, wrote interview questions, and emailed and coordinated visits with several guests and interviewees. During her time at “All Sides,” Torria not only fostered relationships with her supervisor and co-intern, but with people from the Washington Post’s PR team!

In summer afternoons, Torria would head to her second internship at Harm Reduction Ohio, a human rights organization working to improve the health and happiness of people who use drugs. Here, Torria wrote and published a catalog showcasing OneOhio’s board members and highlighting how their demographics do not reflect those who are severely affected by opioid use and overdose. Following the publication of her article, OneOhio replaced their board director with a Black woman. In addition to her catalog, Torria had the opportunity to work on a $750,000 grant proposal that aimed to formalize Narcan distribution and fund the development of syringe exchange programs. Although Torria admits her summer was incredibly busy, she found it to be just the right fit. Through both internships, she reaffirmed her passion for storytelling and was reminded of the power of journalism.

For students looking for journalism internships, Torria advises to cast a wide net! Be willing to go where nobody else will, and say yes to every task assigned.
