Morningstar: Navigating Internship & Career

Thinking about interning for Morningstar, Inc. or joining their Career Development Program? Current Credit Ratings Analyst at Morningstar, Thomas Nguyen, along with a panel of Denison alumni gave a rundown of their opportunities and shared some tips during their virtual alumni information session!

Who is Morningstar, Inc.?

  • Morningstar is a leader in independent investment research in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia that offers substantial products and services to individual investors, financial advisors, asset managers, retirement plan providers and sponsors, and more. Morningstar operates in 32 countries, so it is no doubt their research recommendations are influential. 
  • They strive to create transparency and are focused on bringing clarity to complex ideas and processes while creating tools that support millions of investors in exciting and informative ways that ensure long-term success.
  • They believe in empowering their employees by giving them the tools to succeed including education stipends for people considering an MBA along with providing programs such as Morningstar Scholars Program, Advancing Leaders Program, and Great Books Program.

What are their opportunities?

Morningstar Summer Internship Program

  • Morningstar is looking for juniors to apply for their 10-week program based out of their Chicago office where interns will actively collaborate with and contribute to different parts of the business. Students should expect individual and group projects, developing critical business skills, learning about the financial services and securities industries, and hands-on mentoring.
  • Morningstar is looking for students across all disciplines who have an interest in investing and financial services. They value people who are curious and who love to share new ideas and perspectives. An additional Internship Program is open for technologists.
  • Applications close February 15, but apply now! 

Morningstar Development Program:

  • The MDP offers recent graduates a two year career development opportunity in New York, Chicago, and Toronto.
  • Participants should expect ongoing career development, mentorship, training, networking, and apprenticeship opportunities with an experience that is yours to create!
  • Morningstar is looking for people for three tracks: Traditional, Sales, and Customer Success. Participants should expect to build deep expertise in Morningstar’s data, products, and research, interact with clients, advisors, and institutional investors, contribute to training sessions and projects, develop analytical and communication skills by navigating Morningstar products and providing the best customer experience to clients.

  • A panel of current Morningstar Development Program participants, many of whom were recent Denison graduates, joined Thomas Nguyen to share their personal experiences. They all raved about their hands-on participation that have helped shape them career wise and personally. They also pointed out their community engagement and charity initiatives such as Dollars for Doers, Matching Gifts Program, Global Giving Drive, and cultural events within the office that have created a strong company culture. 
  • Their advice? Get involved and explore! This will help you find what you are passionate about and what you want to do career wise, which will make working at Morningstar an even more valuable experience.
