Music Marketing: Career Tips and Resources for Students

If you are like me, you may aspire to pursue a career that involves both marketing and music. If this is something you are interested in, or simply would like to learn more about, read below for more information and advice on music marketing careers.

To provide you with a background of the profession, here are 6 general careers in music marketing mentioned in an insightful article I read:

  1. Work at a technology company providing guidance to artists on maximizing their creativity and proficiency in utilizing popular platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and Shazam.
  2. Work alongside an artist at a label, management company, distributor, or agency to promote their music releases, tours, and other business endeavors.
  3. Work at a brand or their agency in a partnerships role, crafting deals for artists to promote their merchandise. Work in a role involving partnerships at a brand or their agency, where you arrange deals for artists to promote and market their products.
  4. Join a retailer (such as Spotify or Apple) and take on a role as an artist relations, campaign manager, or consumer marketer.
  5. Work at a content publisher, radio station, or media network to identify appropriate artists for their target audience and create content opportunities.
  6. Market events and experiences for a promoter or venue.

Tips and resources to begin your journey to a career in music marketing:

  2. Apply for internships involving music marketing. This may be at a record label, a radio station, an agency, and so on! Search for these internships through Handshake, LinkedIn, etc.
  3. Explore the Careers in Music website. This site features music business career resources, allows you to research and find careers in music, and read up on music industry insights.
  4. Keep up to date with current music trends. This article explains key trends that emerged in the music industry during 2022.
  5. Build your network. Use LinkedIn to connect and reach out to Denison alumni or others who have experience in music marketing.
  6. Follow music industry blogs to stay in the know about what’s happening in the music industry. This may include Music Business Worldwide, Billboard, or Digital Music News.
  7. Build your marketing skillset. Take a marketing credential course through Denison Edge to develop knowledge in marketing and build your resume.
  8. Take a music course at Denison, such as Music, Society, and Identity, to expand your musical knowledge and experiences.
