Summary:
The Alford Community Leadership and Involvement Center, also known as CLIC, is seeking enthusiastic students with Federal Work Study to serve as America Reads reading tutors in local elementary schools. America Reads tutors work directly in local elementary schools with kindergarten through 4th graders, supporting their literacy skills development. Tutors can expect to work between 6-10 hours per week, Monday – Friday 8:30am -3:30 pm. Each shift is 2 hours long. Schedules will accommodate the tutor’s availability. Tutors with their Denison Defensive driving card have access to Denison cars for transportation back and forth from campus. Tutors with their Denison Defensive Driving card will be given priority in hiring and scheduling. Tutors may also choose to drive their own vehicle. When possible, carpooling will also be arranged. The hourly rate is $13.80. The length of employment is the academic year (August through May).
Responsibilities:
America Reads Tutors are responsible for working one on one or in small groups with students in local elementary schools. They offer support and guidance to students as they work to improve their reading and writing skills. Teachers provide direction to the tutors on the daily activities. Examples of activities are: letter tracing, reviewing sight words, and reading comprehension. Tutors are also responsible for participating in monthly touch base/reflections meetings that take place on Denison campus with the Program Coordinator.
Proper training, supervision, mentorship, and support will be provided.
Qualifications:
Tutors MUST HAVE Federal Work Study- this is a requirement to be hired into the program. Please check your Financial Aid to confirm that you have FWS. Tutors will also be required to pass a background check.
Tutors must enjoy children, be patient, and be a great role model.
In addition, attendance is crucial so effective time management is a must. No more than 2 unexcused absences per semester is allowed.
