The mission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is to spread the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. In the faithful pursuit of this mission, the Archdiocese is seeking a Reporter for the Catholic Standard.
This position will research, report and write news stories and features that capture the faith life of the Archdiocese of Washington and the universal Catholic Church for both the daily website and biweekly newspaper.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Research, report and write news stories and features that capture the faith life of the Archdiocese of Washington and the universal Catholic Church.
- Contribute to the social media efforts through blogs, Facebook, Instagram and X.
- Assist with writing assignments and special projects for the Secretariat of Communications.
- Assist with proofreading pages for the print edition of the Catholic Standard newspaper and website.
Qualifications
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Must be a practicing Catholic with an understanding and appreciation for the Catholic Church with a love for the faith and a desire to reflect that faith in each day’s work.
- Must have good communication skills.
- Must have an attitude of respect for and comfort with diverse cultural groups.
- Must possess the creativity to contribute ideas for stories, special sections and social media that will engage all ages and backgrounds.
- Able to demonstrate talent in a variety of writing assignments, including: breaking news; feature articles on people, parishes and programs; and in-depth analyses of key Catholic teachings and issues affecting Catholics.
- Must be a team player with the willingness to follow the direction of the editor and managing editor, work well with staff photographer and production (layout) staff, and communicate effectively with parish personnel and volunteers and people in the community.
- Must have with an awareness of being an awareness of being an ambassador for the Catholic Standard and the Catholic Church.
- Must have experience with platforms for traditional and new media as well as the discipline to meet deadlines confidently and with an even temper.
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends and have a valid driver’s license to cover stories within the Archdiocese of Washington, which includes the District of Columbia and the five surrounding Maryland counties.
Experience and Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
- Two plus years’ of related journalism and writing experience preferred.
- Must have experience and skill in writing and journalism with a flair for writing that inspires others to live and share their Catholic faith.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, printers and filing cabinets. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Hours and Position:
This is a full-time role which requires reliable transportation and the ability to work evenings and weekends if needed for breaking news.
