Major: Education

Internship Site: Old Town School of Folk Music
Internship Location: Chicago, IL
Brief description of your role and responsibilities.
I worked in the administration office with different departments. I did donor and membership thank you calls, added cover art to the resource center’s online library, helped set up for the annual Square Roots Festival, and took a banjo class.
How has this internship influenced your career direction?
This internship showed me the communication struggle between administration and teachers. Often times both are balancing so many things communication between the two parties falls short. It’s important to bridge this gap to ensure that all employees are treated and valued fairly. That being said, I definitely want to pursue a career that is teaching focused rather than administrated focus, however, I think this experience helped me understand the importance of both roles.
What advice do you have for future interns?
My advice to future interns is to take initiative and advocate for yourself. If there is an opportunity within an internship you are interested in talk to your advisor, boss, or guide and see how you can help the institution while exploring the things you are interested in.
Aside from your internship, are there other tools, resources or programs that have supported your career exploration?
The Knowlton Center has been a huge help to me in finding internship and job opportunities. While also helping fund my experience and provide me with interview and resume building skills and practice.
