Internship Location: New York, New York
Brief description of your role and responsibilities.
I worked as the sole intern to support the Editorial & Influencer/VIP PR teams synchronously. I had the opportunity to work on influencer/talent, partnership, and social ideation by pitching ideas for media growth, along with conducting research on the fashion industry and presenting how the brand might actively contribute to trends. My day-to-day included PR requests for editors, influencers, and celebrities, as well as managing product orders and sample requests. The most exciting aspect of my internship was that I had the opportunity to assist with the preparation and research for the 2024 VS Fashion Show, as it returned for the first time in 6 years with a reframed, inclusive lens.
How has this internship influenced your career direction?
This internship taught me so much, and really grew my passion for the fashion industry and PR’s integral role within it. My time with VS also gave me the opportunity to work more closely brand-side to face the issues of diversity and body representation, both of which are extremely important to me and my past research. I had the opportunity to make so many strong connections and build my network, and it also allowed me to find my own place within my role as someone with a strong vision, ideas, and a meaningful impact. After this experience, I know that I want to move forward in the fashion and PR world, and I hope to work for a brand as special and welcoming as Victoria’s Secret in the future.
What advice do you have for future interns?
My advice would be to stay true to what you are most passionate about, and to find ways to incorporate your interests into your work, no matter what field that may be in. For me, I knew that I wanted to see changes in body representation in fashion, and by working with VS I was lucky enough to see active progress and meaningful change through my work with my team and the brand. In interviews, express what means the most for you and find creative ways to show them how it has influenced your past experiences and how you can use your passion as a tool moving forward.
Aside from your internship, are there other tools, resources or programs that have supported your career exploration?
The French department and my study abroad experience helped me immensely. Because of my French proficiency and courses, I was able to do an internship program in Paris during the course of my junior fall. I had the opportunity to dip my toes in the water of PR and Consulting in fashion, which gave me a major leg up in the internship interview process. Take advantage of all of the amazing opportunities your programs offer you! They will 100% help in the future.
