We’re excited to have Joe with us to share his journey in consulting at Morgan Stanley!
Joe graduated from Denison in 2022 with a degree in Global Commerce. During his time here, he was deeply involved in campus life, from serving as a two-time captain of the NCAA Denison Men’s Lacrosse Team to contributing to the Denison Investment Club and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
When you first got started in this industry, how did you know that this role/industry was right for you?
I knew this was the right industry because I was able to problem solve and help people achieve their financial goals. There is also a competitive aspect to the business. I have always enjoyed working with a team to collaborate and outperform competition.
What do you enjoy the most about working in your current position?
My current position has taught me a lot about the investment management industry, but my favorite thing has to be the fact that I get to work alongside investment specialists who have been doing their job for decades. I am constantly learning from veterans who have experienced many different market cycles and shifts. I am lucky to have the opportunity to always be learning from people who have been doing my job much longer.
How has the Denison experience helped you in your career development?
Denison has been extremely helpful for my early career development. The small classroom structure and interactive curriculum allowed me to endlessly practice collaboration and communication skills. I have realized that the ability to communicate and work with others are the two most important skills that companies look for. Denison allowed me to develop these abilities and put them to use in real business settings.
What is the best advice you received early in your career that has stuck with you until this day?
The best advice I received early in my career is “to pay it forward”.
I have worked hard to break into the industry and role that I love, but I also realize that most of this was luck and the support from others. I had many people who spent their time and resources to help me get my early career going. I am so grateful for those people, and I learned a valuable lesson to continue the good deed and help others who may be looking to start their career or even something completely unrelated. Even the smallest gestures can have a big impact on someone, and I have always done my best to pass along positivity or extend a helping hand, much like the people who helped me.
