We’re excited to have Katherine share her summer experience! Katherine is a junior majoring in Global Commerce with a minor in Communications. At Denison, she is a student-athlete on the field hockey team, a member of Tri Delta, and involved in Women in Business.
What is the internship about? What did you do as an intern?
I worked at Image Unlimited Communications – a Boston agency that helps restaurants create social media content (Instagram posts, reels) and attract relevant influencers to increase events’ publicity.
What did you do as an intern?
I was lucky to be involved in every step of the process. Some of my key responsibilities included:
- Brainstorming event ideas with clients, taking their budgets into account
- Organizing content shoots
- Building lists of relevant influencers and models for outreach
- Planning PR events aimed at maximizing publicity
- Creating project pitches to present to clients
- Strategizing marketing campaigns
- Curating, selecting, and posting Instagram content, including posts and reels
What do you enjoy the most about working in your summer internship?
One of my favorite experiences was being on-site for the PR and marketing shoots, especially the one on the yacht. I hadn’t realized how much thought and detail go into every aspect behind the scenes of a PR campaign. It was fascinating to see how much effort was put into everything, from coordinating with the models to the restaurant’s promotion strategy, to ensure the campaign’s success.
How has the Denison experience helped you in your career development?
I wasn’t always sure what I wanted to pursue, but connecting with a Denison coach and applying to opportunities I found on LinkedIn helped guide me. The support I received for interview preparation was valuable. On top of that, my Global Commerce classes prepared me well with applicable knowledge, and my leadership role at Tri Delta, along with a design and marketing internship at a startup over the winter, gave me hands-on experience.
What is something you wish you knew before starting the internship now that you have gained the experience?
I wish I had known just how important it is to be both creative and quick on your feet. In an agency setting, especially when working on PR and marketing with restaurants, you need to be able to tailor ideas rapidly to meet their specific needs. This past summer, I have learnt to be flexible to roll with the punches and adapt to changes, like when a restaurant I worked with requested new event ideas at the last minute. It’s also important to stay open to different perspectives and be willing to step outside your comfort zone to try something new.
