Alumni Spotlight: Lariona Jacobs ’20

Say hi to Lariona Jacobs, a recent graduate of Denison University who is now a College Access Advisor at College Visions, a nonprofit that aims to empower low-income and first-generation college students to achieve higher education. In her current role, she develops the curriculum and helps students complete college materials such as essays, the FASFA, the CSS Profile, and more. Lariona graduated from Denison in 2020 as an Anthropology/Sociology and Communications double major. Upon Lariona’s admission to Denison, she knew exactly what she wanted to major in. Building community and relationships with others was a core value in Lariona’s life, making her choice of major extremely easy. During her time on the Hill, she was heavily involved. Specifically, she worked for the Office of Residential Communities and Housing and participated in the Black Student Union, Denison Student Governance Association (DCGA), Greek life, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Post Denison, Lariona attended Suffolk University for graduate school where she just recently received a Master’s in Crime and Justice Studies. Now, she is working full-time at College Visions, a fitting path for a people person such as herself. The Anthropology/Sociology and Communications department cultivated a strong sense of empathy and understanding for a wide array of people. It equipped her with the tools (i.e., theories and concepts) to not only better make sense of people and their journeys but to relay such knowledge to her students at College Visions.

And her work does not go unnoticed. Recently, College Visions had a recognition ceremony for their students. Students were able to invite their families and friends. At the ceremony, one of Lariona’s students introduced her to her mother and she immediately embraced Lariona, showering her in gratitude for all the work she had done for her child.

Lariona will be the first to admit, nonprofit work is not easy but it is extremely gratifying: “Be ready for the challenge, it’ll definitely be rewarded. You’re able to develop the tools you’ll need to succeed in another role and the next role.”

Do not be afraid to connect with Lariona via LinkedIn or email (larionajacobs@gmail.com) to hear more about her journey and experiences throughout Denison and beyond!
