I know, it’s mid-April, and some of you are stressed about what you are doing this summer. Maybe you wanted an internship; you have applied, you may have received some rejections (good! means you are in the game so to speak), you have been ignored (feels worse than being rejected) or you are waiting on final decisions. Some of you are just thinking about what you should be doing or maybe you have been so busy it hasn’t crossed your mind.
Other productive options are getting a job, volunteering, and job shadowing. Whatever you decide to do over the summer, I HIGHLY recommend conducting informational interviews to learn about the specifics of a career and to start building relationships with professionals in your chosen career field. Nervous about reaching out to strangers? There are plenty of Denison Alumni willing to talk with you but remember, no one can help you if no one knows what you need help with. Meet with a peer coach or staff member wh can get you started.
The important thing to remember is that you want to construct a productive summer to move you along the career exploration path. That means it could be an internship, however, there are other ways of creating a meaningful summer. The Knowlton Center (yes, we are open over the summer!) has several options for you to engage in career exploration. If you are unclear on your career plans, be sure to check out the Journey Program. Dension EDGE is offering specific skill-building programs. Visit this page to learn about all of your options.
There is still time to visit our Peer Coaches to update resumes and LinkedIn profiles, no appointment is necessary. Our staff members are available to discuss your summer plans and answer questions now and throughout the summer, just schedule an appointment.
Enjoy the remaining few weeks of class!
