Alumni Spotlight: Lindsay Rogers ’21

Lindsay Rogers graduated from Denison in 2021 with a degree in Anthropology/Sociology and Spanish. Currently, Lindsay lives abroad in Madrid, Spain, working as an English assistant at Colegio Maria Moliner secondary school. There, she teaches Spanish students about the history and phonetics surrounding the English language. Lindsay further elaborates on this: “I conduct interactive listening, comprehension, speaking, and writing activities for students 11-17 years old. In addition, I create engaging presentations and lesson plans to teach students about the culture, history, and traditions of the U.S.”

Lindsay believes that her background in Anthropology, Sociology and Spanish have better equipped her with the necessary skills to succeed not only as an English assistant, but also in her general post-grad career. She states that, “I have been able to use this skillset as a teacher to motivate and encourage students to continue to develop their English skills and to understand how outside factors affect how they learn.” Lindsay provides further clarification about her own educative experiences, stating how she remembers being conflicted on what she could do with an Anthropology/Sociology degree, only to discover that the possibilities are endless.

Lindsay gives great advice when it comes to planning for the future–don’t stress! She states, “I remember feeling very overwhelmed and behind because I didn’t have a 5-year plan or even a plan for after graduation. My advice to seniors is to not give up and don’t worry about having your life figured out by graduation! I would apply to 20+ jobs and only hear back from one or two.” Lindsay also stresses the importance of practicing interviews: “Just like you have to practice before a sports competition, you need to practice before an interview. The more interviews you do, the more natural and comfortable you feel!” She continues on saying, “A year ago, I never thought I would be an English teacher in Spain, but now I can’t imagine doing anything else! My last piece of advice is to not put yourself in a box. Remember, your first job does not have to be your dream job and it’s totally normal to try out different jobs and career paths.” It is important to trust yourself in processes such as these and to above all, do what makes you happy!
