Heather’s Picks: Events, Jobs & Internships Week of 2/21

There are so many great opportunities for Denison students interested in Healthcare and Clinical Research.  Check out this week’s spotlights, chosen by Heather, below!

Opportunities:

On March 4-7, Volunteer with OhioHealth at the Arnold Sports Festival!  They will have medical tents set up throughout the Greater Columbus Convention Center.  Roles include checking in medical staff, helping direct flow of injured athletes, and helping with documentation etc.  Sign up to volunteer here (list role as “Denison undergrad”) and email Dr. Ben Bring at Benjamin.Bring@ohiohealth.com with any questions.

Community Health Coach Program: Are you interested in helping others? Are you thinking about a career in healthcare? If yes, then apply to become a Health Coach. In this two semester experience, you will work with Licking Memorial Hospital nurses to help patients in the local community with their wellness. Applications are being accepted for the 2021-2022 academic year! Due February 27th.

Dr. Anne Taylor Shadowing Experience:  During the summer break, you will have the opportunity to do a one-week shadow with a physician alum from Denison. Dr. Anne Taylor is a board-certified plastic surgeon. During this time, you will have exposure to patient care in a clinic, hospital, or a setting spanning multiple different medical conditions and procedures.

Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Shadowing Experience: Dr. Jason Hurbanek ’99 offers an opportunity to shadow him for a month in his busy, sports medicine practice.

Internships: 

Granville Township EMT – The GTFD Denison Internship Program will include training and on the job experiences as an EMT.  The selected intern will receive a stipend from the Denison Internship Program (regardless of need) and can live in on-campus housing.

Ovarian Screening Research Program at University of Kentucky Ovarian Screening Program: https://denison.joinhandshake.com/edu/jobs/5970512  The internship is designed for rising junior (class of 2023) & rising senior (class of 2022) undergraduate students who are seriously considering a career in medicine or bioscience. The UK Ovarian Screening Program has 45000+ participants and has given >305,000 free screens, averaging over 1100 screens monthly. The focus of the screening program is to demonstrate that screening detects early-stage ovarian cancer when the disease is curable. The interns will be involved in the digitization of sonography results, audits, participant follow-up, and data . The interns will be working adjacent to the Gynecologic Oncology Clinic and will have interactions with screening personnel, and the medical staff at weekly patient care conferences. Weekly attendance at tumor conferences, seminars and surgeries are included in the experience.
